Interventions for Treating Posttraumatic Stress Disorder

Exposure to traumatic events can lead to potentially lasting and debilitating symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Both military and non-military populations are exposed to events that can trigger symptoms of PTSD, including combat, physical and sexual assault, natural disasters, etc. It is critical that clinicians are aware of evidence-based interventions for treating individuals with PTSD so they can help prevent the long-term effects and complications of this disorder. In this course, you will learn about three interventions that are the most supported by research, and thus recommended as first-line treatment for adults with PTSD: Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Prolonged Exposure (PE), and Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) (Department of Veterans Affairs, n.d.). These three treatments are considered trauma-focused therapies; their primary focus is on the client’s memories or interpretations of the trauma event or events. All three treatment approaches are based on the cognitive-behavioral theory of emotions; however, each treatment type differs in application of the theory. Case examples will be used to demonstrate how the key techniques of each approach can be applied in your setting. The goal of this course is to provide addictions, behavioral health counseling, marriage and family therapy, psychology, and social work professionals in health and human services settings with skills for treating PTSD.
