PEG Tubes and End-of-Life Care

For decades, tube feeding has been used for patients who are unable or unwilling to maintain their nutritional and hydration status through the foods and fluids they consume orally. The decision to place a feeding tube can be difficult. While feeding tubes can greatly benefit some patients, others may face a significant burden with one. This course will review when percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) tube placement is appropriate, the risks associated with offering tube feeding during end-of-life care, and the legal and ethical issues that should guide healthcare providers during the decision-making process. The goal of this course is to educate the healthcare team in the acute care setting on the risks and benefits of feeding tube placement during end-of-life care.
