Peer Support via Telehealth

Peer support specialists play an essential role in behavioral health treatment. Telehealth peer support services expanded as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. This was the first time many insurance companies started reimbursing for peer support via telehealth. Peer support specialists were able to expand treatment services, including helping more clients in rural and hard to reach areas. Clients with health issues that may have prevented them from seeking treatment were now able to meet with someone.

The transition to telehealth as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic made peer support specialists’ responsibilities more complicated. They were providing emotional support as people managed altered daily routines, financial stress, and social isolation. They also worked hard to combat opioid overdoses and high rates of suicide. Despite the quick transition to virtual services, enrollment rates for behavioral health treatment increased as well as client engagement (Langabeer et al., 2021).

Because of these challenges, it is essential that peer support specialists are trained on telehealth practices and delivery. Training enables peer support specialists to be successful with delivering services as well as helping them to manage challenging situations.

The goal of this course is to provide peer support specialists in behavioral health settings with training to use telehealth services.
