Stages of Change and Motivational Interviewing for Paraprofessionals

The process of changing a behavior can be challenging for many people. This process includes various factors and stages, which each person progresses through at their own rate. Your work in health and human services likely includes helping clients change both health-protecting and health-risking behaviors. It is important to see where clients are in terms of their readiness and motivation to make changes. Meeting a client where they are in the process of behavior change can help support and encourage successful, long-term change. 

The goal of this course is to provide paraprofessionals in health and human services with information on how to support clients through changing their behavior. You will learn about the Stages of Change, a client’s readiness to change, and motivational interviewing strategies to use with clients. 

Some of the skills and approaches covered in this course may be part of your job within your organization. Other skills or approaches may be outside the scope of your role as a paraprofessional or outside of your agency’s policies, procedures, and practices. When in doubt, always check with your supervisor.
