Using Rigid Sterilization Containers

Rigid containers for packaging and sterilization gained popularity as a means of cutting costs by being able to reduce waste associated with disposable wrap materials. In addition, the rigid construction of these containers meant better protection of expensive instruments from damage during handling and transport. This solution seemed like a no-brainer and began being widely adopted among healthcare facility sterile processing departments. However, concerns began to emerge when studies of rigid containers showed that almost all containers studied failed to prevent bacterial contamination when stored for later use (Shaffer et al., 2015). New attention has now been drawn to best practices for use and handling of rigid containers to maximize their performance as a method for packaging sterile instrumentation.

This course is designed to educate sterile processing (SP) professionals about the potential hazards associated with the use of rigid sterilization containers, and advantages and disadvantages of their use. Best practices for use and handling of rigid containers for sterilization packaging will also be discussed.

The goal of this course is to equip sterile processing professionals with knowledge of proper use of rigid sterilization containers.
