Recognizing and Intervening in the Early Stages of Psychosis

Each year, 100,000 young people in the U.S. develop a psychotic disorder. Psychotic disorders are among the costliest and most disabling of all health conditions, with an estimated economic burden of $60 billion annually in the U.S. (Chong et al., 2016).

Fortunately, evidence has accumulated showing that early detection is possible and that specialized early intervention can dramatically improve outcomes, which we will discuss further in this course.

The goal of this course is to provide education to psychology, addictions, marriage and family therapy, behavioral health counseling, social work, and nursing professionals that work in a health and human services setting about why and how to intervene in the early stages of psychosis.
