Advanced Practice Interventions for People Living with Co-Occurring Disorders

Co-occurring disorders (CODs) are complex and require specialized treatment. CODs increase the severity of symptoms, complicate the recovery process, and lead to other negative outcomes like increased risks of suicide and returning to substance use. Integrated treatment for CODs, rather than addressing disorders individually with different providers, is the best practice in behavioral healthcare. Yet, many providers are unsure of how to treat specific CODs together. The goal of this course is to provide behavioral health professionals working in health and human services settings with advanced practice interventions for people living with substance use disorders and co-occurring mental illnesses, like mood, post-traumatic stress, and schizophrenia spectrum disorders. Building on your foundational knowledge of evidence-based techniques, such as trauma-informed care, motivational interviewing, and cognitive behavioral interventions, you will learn how to adapt them to treat individuals with these CODs.
