Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency and the Respiratory Therapist

Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency is an inherited condition that can result in lung disease, liver disease, and problems of the skin and vasculature. It is generally underdiagnosed. Respiratory care professionals, due to their heavy exposure to patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), are uniquely poised to identify patients who may benefit from testing for this deficiency. This course discusses the nature of alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency and the relevant pathophysiology and epidemiology. The relationship between this disease and COPD, as well as factors that lead to suspicion of this deficiency and definitive testing will also be discussed. Information on treatments, prognostic factors, and patient/caregiver education will be provided.

The goal of this course is to provide respiratory care professionals with knowledge and concepts related to alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency.
