CAUTIs: A Non-Reimbursable Condition

Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) are one of the most common hospital-acquired infections in the U.S. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) discontinued reimbursing healthcare facilities for the additional costs associated with treating patients for CAUTIs. There are evidence-based strategies to reduce CAUTIs during the time of insertion and while maintaining the catheter, preferably for the shortest duration possible. This course informs nurses about CAUTIs in various settings, their causes, and prevention techniques.

The goal of this course is to increase nurses’ understanding of the changes in Medicare reimbursement for and methods to prevent CAUTIs.
