Enteral Nutrition and the Transition to Oral Feeding

The use of evidence-based information is essential for speech-language pathologists (SLPs) to effectively assess and treat individuals receiving enteral nutrition (EN) due to aspiration risk or insufficient intake of nutrition and hydration. EN is often only temporary, and SLPs must monitor a variety of factors to determine whether the person can safely resume oral feeding. This course defines and discusses various types of EN and their indications, clinical signs of readiness to return to oral feeding, and assessment and treatment of swallowing deficits during this transition. The SLP’s role and the importance of open communication within the interdisciplinary team are highlighted.
