In Session: Ethical Decision-Making

A code of ethics cannot begin to address all the ethical dilemmas behavioral health professionals face in actual practice. It is not intended to be a prescriptive set of solutions to any ethical challenge that may arise. Professional codes of ethics are guides that address some of the common situations that you may encounter and in which the public has an interest. An ethical dilemma occurs when a therapist encounters a conflict between their professional duties and values and then has to decide which takes priority (Barnett, 2019; Reamer 2018). Occasionally, professional codes of ethics do provide explicit guidance as to how you should handle a particular situation. However, your actions may support one or more standards of the ethics code while violating one or more other standards. Or your actions may involve a conflict of interest involving multiple individuals. It is common for behavioral health professionals to encounter these “grey areas” where possible solutions to an ethical dilemma are less apparent or where there appears to be no ideal solution. By interacting with this individual in a simulated therapy session, you will see how your selection of responses impacts the ethical dilemma that is presented. Supervisory input will also help guide you through this simulation exercise.
