Instrument Processing: Detergents and Disinfectants

Most surgeries involve the use of surgical instruments, supplies, and/or devices. After a procedure, reusable items must be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected and/or sterilized before they are safe for use on another patient. This involves the use of detergents, disinfectants, and other chemicals. Using the wrong agent or using an agent in the wrong way can be hazardous to sterile processing (SP) professionals and patients.

The content of this course is applicable to SP professionals and is designed to provide education about the different types and proper use of detergents and disinfectants used in the central sterile services department (CSSD). A review of the advantages and disadvantages, along with the potential hazards associated with the use of these agents, will also be discussed.

The goal of this course is to equip sterile processing professionals with knowledge of best practices for processing instruments.
