Podcast: Aligning Rehabilitation Goals with Culture: Working with Patients from the Muslim Community

An estimated 80% of patient outcomes are due to factors outside of the rehabilitation intervention, including health-related behaviors. It can rightfully feel overwhelming for clinicians to think they need to be experts in the impairments they are treating and also experts in health-related behaviors from different cultures. We all know this is not a realistic expectation. What is realistic is learning how to ask the right questions to better align your rehabilitation interventions and plan of care to best meet each patient’s needs. This podcast will provide you, the rehab clinician, with strategies to interact with patients who identify with a different culture from yourself so you and the patient can co-create the best outcomes. To model application of these strategies, we discuss key considerations when working with patients from the Muslim community with an intercultural expert.
