Substance Use and the Family for Paraprofessionals

A substance use disorder is typically thought of as a problem “in an individual,” but there is a bigger picture to consider. Its impact can be devastating to the family and loved ones of the individual with the substance use disorder. This problem is often associated with family conflict or dysfunction, employment and financial problems, and marital discord. Families can play an important role in recovery, especially if they are able to understand the dynamics related to substance use disorders and the manner in which they can help. This course will give you knowledge of the impact of substance use disorders on families as well as the family’s impact on the development and persistence of substance use. You will learn to identify and anticipate family problems that may result from or co-occur with substance use. You will also learn the basics of family systems theory as it relates to substance use disorder. By familiarizing yourself with this information, you will be better able to identify factors that contribute to the emergence and persistence of substance use problems, and you will be able to work within a treatment team context to help address these factors. Vignettes and interactive exercises will give you the opportunity to apply these concepts so that you can increase your ability to understand these issues and work effectively with families and individuals with substance use disorders. The content in this course is applicable to paraprofessionals in health and human services settings.
