Core Concepts: Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT)

This course introduces the core components of Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT), an evidence-based approach for identifying and addressing substance use disorders. SBIRT is used throughout healthcare as an approach to the delivery of early intervention and treatment services for persons with substance use disorders, as well as those who are at risk of developing these disorders. Caregivers across the healthcare spectrum must know the basic concepts of SBIRT to improve the care and outcomes of the people who are seeking services. Participants will learn how to effectively screen individuals seeking services, engage in brief motivational conversations, and refer individuals to appropriate care, improving outcomes for at-risk populations.
